Open Positions

A Postdoc Position in Deep Learning and Computational Media Studies at UCLA

Location: Los Angeles (UCLA).

Starting date: 2019 Fall (12-24 months).

An interdisciplinary team of UCLA and Stanford researchers are looking for a candidate who will join our NSF-funded project as a postdoctoral researcher. The main goals of the project are to build an integrated media database which consists of international TV news videos, Twitter, Sina Weibo, newspaper data, and to develop computational tools to analyze multimodal data. We currently have individual systems collecting data from each source independently, which need to be unified and interlinked.

This integrated database will allow researchers to investigate comprehensive research questions such as inter-media or international news flow and agenda setting. Special focuses are made on multimodality to understand the effects of audiovisual cues (eg, facial expressions, gestures, tone, iconic visuals) as well as verbal content. The project builds on a variety of computer vision, audio processing, NLP tools to automatically analyze media content, cluster articles, tweets, news stories from multiple platforms, and detect and track news event trajectories.

The post-doc will work closely with PIs and graduate students to (1) design and develop the computing system and analytic tools and (2) to perform research on intermedia news flow and multimodal communication using our data.

The successful candidate should have strong computational skills and background in machine learning and related fields. Interested candidates should send their CV and a link to their Google Scholar page to Prof. Jungseock Joo (jjoo@comm.ucla.edu).
